Walter Camp field notes, folder 51, BYU Library. Richard E. Thompson was appointed second lieutenant, 6th Infantry, after graduating from the Military Academy on July 1, 1864. He was on the supply steamer Far West at the time of the Little Bighorn River fight. He was probably interviewed by Walter Camp at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
Richard E. Thompson, assigned to the 6th U.S. Infantry, Thompson was Acting Commissary of Subsistence for the Dakota Campaign in 1876, and was a member of the Yellowstone Expedition.
